Costa Rica Transportation Options
What is the best way to get around in Costa Rica?
There are a variety of ways to get around Costa Rica. For larger groups or those just wishing to enjoy their vacation time to the fullest, generally a private shuttle or a rental car are the best options. For quick trips in-town or at the airport, the best choice is likely a licensed taxi. For the adventurous hostel backpacker, the best choice may be a public bus or a shared shuttle for the cost savings. Really, the best way to get around Costa Rica is the way that suits your specific needs. Here we'll take a quick look at the most popular transportation options.
-
Though the App functions, Uber is illegal in Costa Rica and is not a great option for those who are looking to avoid getting pulled over by the authorities on their vacation while their driver requests you and your group pretend you're old friends even though the driver is not necessarily Costa Rican and you're just visiting the country. Pirate taxis (non-licensed taxis) and Uber rideshare services are not recommended for safety and legal reasons.

Orange Airport Taxis are great for short trips to and from the airport. If you have a trip over twenty minutes or a larger group, a shuttle service is likely better for price and value,
-
Red Government Controlled Taxis are generally a safe mode of transportation. Quality of vehicle and driver varies. The price can be steep for longer trips, but they are quick and convenient. These are a great option for quick in-town trips for groups under four.
Public Buses & Shared Shuttles
-
Costa Rica has buses servicing nearly all destinations. You will usually have a walk or a taxi ride from the bus station after the ride. Keep an eye on your luggage, belongings and surroundings at all times. This is the least convenient option, but certainly the cheapest.
-
Shared Shuttles can be a good middle of the road option between public buses and private shuttles. These run on strict schedules with other passengers aboard and a few extra stops, but they tend to be just a little cheaper than private shuttles and a lot safer than public buses.
Private Shuttles
-
For Costa Rica, private shuttles are highly recommended for groups of four or more. Even for smaller groups these may be best, as they generally offer the best service and the best, friendliest drivers. Most private shuttle services include one hour of free stops for lunch, photo ops, bathroom breaks or whatever you wish. While the cost is a bit more than a shared shuttle or a bus, the quality of vacation time and safety are usually well worth it.
Rental Cars
-
The first question we are usually asked about rental cars is, "Do I need a special driver's license to drive a rental car in Costa Rica?" For most travelers, the answer is no. Upon arrival in Costa Rica, most travelers are awarded a tourist visa for up to ninety days and also an international driver's license for up to ninety days, which is the same driver's license from your home country. Rental cars are great options for travelers who want the freedom to go where they want, when they want and who aren't intimidated by driving in a foreign country.
